On 30 July 2017, the Ethnography Commons co-sponsored a public conversation between Dr Dave Wilson from Victoria University of Wellington's New Zealand School of Music and Dr Lorena Gibson from VUW's Cultural Anthropology programme about Wilson's work with the CSPS Ensemble, a Macedonian jazz collective, and their new album On the Face Place. Wilson and Gibson's conversation explored the relationship between music-making, collaboration, and ethnography. They discussed the ways in which Wilson's scholarly and musical practice shaped and was shaped by his Macedonian collaborators. Finally, they considered music-making as a form of commoning.
After the conversation, Wilson and a group of Wellington-based musicians played a selection of compositions from the CSPS Ensemble's new album, On the Face Place.
